Best seller too steamy for public library?

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV)- People can find all kinds of books within the Gaston-Lincoln Regional Library System. Fifty Shades of Grey is not one of them.

Director Cindy Moose says the New York Times best-seller doesn't fit their criteria. She said there are two big strikes against it: it's in the erotica category and it doesn't have a professional book review.

Other library systems have bought the book and the wait list to check it out is growing.

"It's not my cup of tea," said Carol Wilson, the library director for Cleveland County. However, she said they considered demand and the community when making the decision to buy it.

"We can take you anywhere," Wilson said. "Our walls do not stop you."

She points to the classics, children's books, romance, westerns, and Christian literature the library carries. None of them have the waiting list Fifty Shades of Grey has right now.

Construction careers and college? Students from several counties get an education

Construction careers and college? Students from several counties get an education

SALISBURY -  In some ways it was a typical day for high school students from Cabarrus, Rowan, Kannapolis, Lincoln, and Gaston.  They were playing some video games; actually high tech simulators, doing a little yard work; that is by testing John Deere commercial landscaping equipment, and driving around in a new Hyundai; well, a piece of heavy equipment made by the Korean automaker, so you can tell, it was far from typical.

The students were taking part in Construction Career Day, sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord.

"I thought it was pretty interesting," said Bryce Burns, a senior at West Rowan High School. "You drive three nails and see how fast you can get them in, there was a welding simulation to see how far you can weld, I tested and drove some equipment, hopefully I can use that in the near future."

Why not use it now? Couldn't these students just go from high school straight to work and save the time and expense of a college education?

That's the path many are able to take, but most we found don't want to do that.

Vandals pour concrete into community pool under construction

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV)- Police in Gastonia are investigating after they say someone vandalized a community swimming pool with bags of concrete.

According to a Gastonia Police report, officers were called to the Lineberger Park pool, along East Garrison Boulevard, last week to the report of vandalism.

Officers arrived around 11:51 a.m. on Monday, May 7th.  They were told by an employee that someone had broken into the pool and dumped at least two bags of concrete into the pool, along with other construction debris.

The pool had reportedly already been filled with water, in preparation for the opening in two weeks.

The pool is under construction as part of a $1.75 million renovation to the pool and the bathhouse in the park. The park has been undergoing a major transformation since last year.
