Walmart tops Harris Teeter as top grocery choice in Charlotte-area

ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) - Harris Teeter just lost it's crown as the favorite grocer in the Charlotte metro area. It could be a symptom of families looking to save money.

Walmart has taken the lead in the grocery store wars however Lynn Cain says she chooses sides by who has the better deals.

It's spring break for school in Rock Hill, which means Lynn Cain's seven children need to be entertained and fed.

"This would be my bill, one of my bills this would last me maybe two weeks," said Cain holding up a grocery receipt that is 3 and a half feet long.

In the last six months Cain says that bill has tripled in price.  With the price at the pump going up, price for goods going up too.

"$4.99 for a bag of chips a couple of months back $3 was the most expensive," said Cain "Milk has gone up tremendously, and coffee it's gone up four or five bucks."

Chinese company announces North American headquarters in Lincoln Co.

DENVER, NC (WBTV) - Gov. Bev Perdue joined executives from RATO Power Co Ltd. in announcing that the company will locate its North American headquarters in Lincoln County on Thursday. 

RATO manufactures ATVs, motorcycles, water pumps, generators, and general purpose engines used primarily for outdoor power equipment.  The company is expected to create as many as 40 jobs with the location of the North American headquarters to Denver.  This will be RATO’s first facility outside of China.  

“Creating jobs is my top priority,” Gov. Perdue said. “North Carolina continues to attract globally competitive companies because of our highly ranked business climate and our tremendous workforce. We welcome these new jobs and the commitment to North Carolina by RATO, and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

RATO’s global headquarters is located in Chongqing, China and was founded in 2007.  In January of this year, RATO acquired Denver Global Products based in Denver, N.C.  Roger Leon, the president of Denver Global, will become the president of RATO North America. 

Ten tips for filing taxes in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Tax season is here and making it easy for taxpayers to understand and file their taxes is a top priority for the North Carolina Department of Revenue.  Providing the correct information and remembering a few simple tips will help ensure you have an error-free tax return that can be processed quickly and correctly.

 

NCDOR offers the following easy tips and recommendations as you prepare your taxes this year.

1. Extended filing date- Individual income taxpayers will have until April 17, 2012, to file returns, extensions and payments normally due on April 15. The extension is to accommodate Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. Get more details on the extension.

Duke Energy looking to hire workers for apprentice program

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Duke Energy is hiring apprentice line service workers in its Carolinas service area.

Those interested in learning more about these openings are invited to a job fair on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Duke Energy’s Little Rock Operations Center, located 6325 Wilkinson Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28214.

Folks interested will gain a complete understanding of the training required for this demanding job, which is made up of both classroom work and on-the-job training. Duke Energy representatives will be on hand to answer your questions. 

Following this information session, those interested will be instructed to apply for the apprentice program through the Duke Energy website, www.duke-energy.com.

BBB names 'Dirty Dozen' worst rated businesses of 2011

BBB names 'Dirty Dozen' worst rated businesses of 2011

The Better Business Bureau released 2011 ‘Dirty Dozen’ list of area businesses with the most unanswered or unresolved complaints in 2011 on Tuesday.

Consumers filed 12,914 complaints with the BBB against businesses in the Southern Piedmont area of North and South Carolina last year.

“This year, there are only nine businesses on the BBB’s Dirty Dozen list,” said BBB President Tom Bartholomy, “because we are not including companies that have gone out of business.”
