BBB hit by email phishing scam

BBB hit by email phishing scam

CHARLOTTE - The BBB system nationwide is the target of a phishing email scam attack today. Many businesses, locally and across the country, report receiving an email from the BBB that claims that the business has a complaint to be reviewed. The email instructs the business to click on a link to review the complaint and respond to it.

If you receive a similar email, you should delete it immediately. Do not click on any links because you could download a virus to your computer.

If you have already received the email and clicked on the link, you should run your computer's anti-virus software to detect and remove any viruses that may be on your computer.

“We’ve already heard from dozens of businesses in the Charlotte area this morning,” said BBB President Tom Bartholomy. “These businesses were suspicious of the email and deleted it.”

For more information, please call the BBB at (704) 927-8611.

U.S. Postal Service says mail delivery will slow down

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The U.S. Postal Service is facing bankruptcy and fighting to stay relevant after millions of Americans have traded so-called snail mail for the Internet.

But instead of trying to improve its product, the Postal Service is slowing it down, pushing even loyal customers to take their business elsewhere.

"I'm sure it will," said Louanne Hamm as she mailed off a batch of cookies today in Charlotte. "I have family in Portland, Oregon, so I'm always sending things to my children, and they're waiting for Grandma's package," she said.

Currently, first class mail arrives within one to three days.

BBB Advice: Shop ‘small’ for great deals during ‘Small Business Saturday’ on Nov. 26

BBB Advice: Shop ‘small’ for great deals during ‘Small Business Saturday’ on Nov. 26

You’ve heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the two biggest shopping days of the year, but have you heard of ‘Small Business Saturday’?

“A new campaign is underway to encourage consumers to shop at small businesses on Saturday, Nov. 26,” said BBB President Tom Bartholomy. “Small businesses have great deals too, but usually do not have the advertising dollars to spend promoting their sales like the major retail chain stores do.”

Small businesses also are less crowded than bigger stores and may offer specialty items or one-of-a-kind gifts that you can’t find in the larger stores.

BBB Alert: Shopping online? Beware of misleading shipping and handling fees

The online shopping season is in full swing and will peak within the first week of December.  If you are planning to buy gifts online or from Infomercials on television, the Better Business Bureau has a warning for you about the ways retailers make money on your orders by charging separate shipping and handling fees.

Shipping and handling fees are certainly not new, but retailers are finding ways to make extra money with special promotions such as “order now and we’ll double your order,” or “buy now and we’ll include a free gift” – it may sound like a good deal at first, until you realize that you will be charged separate shipping and handling fees on each item, including the “free” gifts and the “bonus” products.

BBB Advice: ‘Tis the Season to Get A Part-Time Job! Start Looking Now!

BBB Advice: ‘Tis the Season to Get A Part-Time Job! Start Looking Now!

Many job hunters will get an early present this year as retailers hire seasonal employees for the holiday season. Competition for these jobs will be high.

“The holiday season creates a welcome bump in the number of job openings, particularly in the retail and restaurant industry,” said BBB President Tom Bartholomy.  “While the jobs may be temporary, the income can make a big difference to people who are unemployed.

The BBB offers the following advice for job hunters this holiday season:

Start the job search early - The key to landing a seasonal job is to start searching early. Retail, shipping, restaurants and catering companies are common sources of seasonal employment and now is the time for job hunters to begin submitting applications and resumes.

Businesses have started hiring seasonal workers

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) - The Black Friday mania that marks the start of the Christmas shopping season is still two months away, but now is the time stores "staff up" for the holidays.

A place called “home” - Every day school buses stop at the Center of Hope to bring more than 100 children “home.” For the sake of these children—more than 1,000 pass through the Center of Hope’s doors each year—the shelter seeks to provide daily stability and a permanent way out of homelessness. As Charlotte’s only 24/7 year-round emergency shelter, the Center of Hope— a 36,000 square-foot facility with 224 beds—routinely operates at capacity. In 2010 it admitted more than 5,710 people, including five women over the age of 85, and welcomed 27 newborns directly from the hospital.  The largest such shelter in the Southeast, the Center of Hope offers a comprehensive program of onsite services, including the nation’s only Boys & Girls Club within a homeless shelter.
