Charlotte inspector fighting to regulate body shops in NC

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Charlotte-based auto inspector wants to see the state license or regulate body shops to prevent shoddy repair work.

Billy Walkowiak opened up a new business, "Collision Safety Consultants" in Belmont earlier this year.

He checks out cars after they leave body shop. He said some repairs are so shoddy, they threaten the structural integrity of the car, and put the driver and passengers in danger.

He's on a mission to get North Carolina's body shops licensed. He argues that doctors, lawyers, and cosmetologists need licenses to work, and body shops should have some oversight as well.

"You have to have so many hours of training before you can braid someone's hair, but you don't have to have any credentials to fix someone's car," said Walkowiak.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A Gaston County man claims someone stole his wallet while he was being treated in a hospital emergency room in Charlotte.

The incident occurred July 26 at Carolinas Medical Center on Blythe Boulevard.

The incident, however, was just reported to police on September 6.

Francisco Torres, of Bessemer City, told police his clothing and wallet were placed in a bag by hospital staff.

During his release from the hospital, the bag was given back to him.

Torres said his wallet which contained $2,400 was missing. His clothing was still in the bag.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A Dallas couple was arrested for attempting to steal hundreds of dollars worth of clothing from a store in southwest Charlotte.

The incident occurred at the Old Navy store at 14147 Rivergate Parkway on Wednesday, August 3.

A loss prevention officer at the store spotted Reginald Landrum, 46, cutting tags off several items of clothing and giving them to 34-year-old Wykeisha Whiteside to conceal.

Police said Whiteside placed the 5 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of shorts, 11 shirts, and 1 skirt in a pocketbook she brought into the store with her.

Landrum then cut tags off more garments and concealed them, the police report said.

The value of the 31 clothing items was $337.
