Vandals pour concrete into community pool under construction | Crime
GASTONIA, NC (WBTV)- Police in Gastonia are investigating after they say someone vandalized a community swimming pool with bags of concrete.
According to a Gastonia Police report, officers were called to the Lineberger Park pool, along East Garrison Boulevard, last week to the report of vandalism.
Officers arrived around 11:51 a.m. on Monday, May 7th. They were told by an employee that someone had broken into the pool and dumped at least two bags of concrete into the pool, along with other construction debris.
The pool had reportedly already been filled with water, in preparation for the opening in two weeks.
The pool is under construction as part of a $1.75 million renovation to the pool and the bathhouse in the park. The park has been undergoing a major transformation since last year.
Parks and Recs officials planned to have the pool completed and ready to open on Memorial Day weekend. They are hoping to be able to clean up the vandalism in time, so that it will not delay the opening.
"We're keeping our fingers crossed that we can still do that, but we are not 100 percent sure," said Chuck Dellinger, Gastonia Recreation Director.
Dellinger told WBTV that some of the concrete solidified on the bottom of the pool, creating spots on the pool. Employees had to drain the pool and use a pressure washer in an attempt to fix the problem.
The renovation was being paid for with a combination of bonds that passed in 2010 and federal stimulus money.
